Roblox Mid-level Engineer: OA, game-based challenges and a project deep dive
I had wanted to work for Roblox for a long time so I was pumped when I got a response from the recruiter wanting to schedule a chat. The chat was pretty normal. They asked about my background, motivations and why I wanted to work for Roblox.
Next was an OA which included Longest Substring and Course Schedule II LeetCode questions which were fine but I did struggle on time so make sure to prepare before unless you feel confident with your DSA.
The next round was broken into two parts: 45 minutes doing proprietary game-based challenges and then 45 minutes to go deep on a project I had worked on in the past. Luckily I had prepared this when prepping the behavioral side so make sure to go deep here because I feel like it's a good opportunity to show off what you know.
The next round was a behavioral interview where they wanted to see how I approached problems and the consequences of decisions I made.
Overall the process took 4 weeks and the recruiter was great for keeping me updated during the process. Fortunately I got the offer and can't wait to start! I did prepare for 4 months leading up to the interviews so it certainly wasn't an overnight success so keep going if you're feeling stuck.

What were the game-based challenges like in practice? Actual gameplay logic, or puzzles dressed up in a game theme?
Closer to the second. Small simulations with entities on a grid and rules to apply each tick. Nothing needed Roblox knowledge, but reading the spec carefully mattered more than raw speed.
