Deliveroo Staff Engineer: LLD coding round, Flash Sale System design, then a hiring freeze after the DoorDash news

The first round was a call with an internal recruiter. It was pretty chill, he just asked about why I was leaving and why I wanted to work at Deliveroo.

The next round was a technical coding round. I can't remember the exact coding question I was given but it was a LLD and I had prepared with the LLD list here so it was pretty easy.

After that was a system design. It was design a Flash Sale System which makes sense. They expect you to go very deep on the scalability side of things and to also handle a lot of edge cases. I actually really enjoyed this round a lot.

The final round was with the hiring manager and was behavioral style. They were all pretty basic questions:

  • Mentored a teammate

  • Dealt with an ambiguous problem

  • Proposed an idea / led an architectural change

  • How do I stay up to date and developing as an engineer

  • Discussed the specifics of how the team works

After this round their acquisition by DoorDash was announced and I think they had a reorg, so it took them ages to get back and it turned out they were no longer hiring for the position which was very frustrating.

Worth adding for anyone reading later: the DoorDash deal was announced right around then, so this is not a normal Deliveroo outcome. Sorry it ended that way.
